How a veterinary assistant course kickstarted Laila's career

After finishing college, Laila decided to pursue her dream career and study a veterinary assistant course. Since finishing her veterinary assistant course with Open Study College, Laila has started a new position as a veterinary care assistant. Here’s Laila’s story and how she succeeded on her distance learning journey…

What’s your background in terms of education/career?

Prior to studying my level 3 veterinary support assistant course with Open Study College, I spent 2 years at a college studying a level 2 animal care diploma. Alongside being at college, I had a part-time job working as a dog grooming assistant. This allowed me to have a hands-on approach and to gain practical skills that I would be needing for a future dedicated to working with animals.

What made you want to study your chosen subject?

Although I loved dog grooming, I knew it wasn’t the right career path for me. I have always wanted to work within a veterinary practice. It has been my dream for as long as I can remember and thanks to Open Study College my dream became a reality.

What was your motivation for studying?

I like to live by the quote “the expert in anything was once a beginner”. This helped me to motivate myself, even when I thought I was never going to achieve my goal.

Why did you choose distance learning over traditional study methods?

I chose distance learning over traditional studying methods as it allows you to study from the comfort of your own home. I believe that a classroom is not for everybody and, therefore, studying in a classroom will not be as effective. As someone who found school challenging, I definitely recommend distance learning to anyone who is also struggling/has struggled.

Why did you choose to study with Open Study College?

I chose Open Study College as I know that when you sign up to your course, you are assigned a tutor who is available to help you every step of the way. They are only ever an email away. I also chose Open Study College because there are no strict guidelines, which allowed me to balance a job whilst studying.

What have you enjoyed most about your studies?

I have enjoyed the wide range of topics involved in my assignments, it has allowed me to broaden my horizons.

What do you plan to do with your course after completing your studies?

It is with great thanks to Open Study College and the wonderful tutor that I was assigned, that I am now in my first ever ‘veterinary care assistant’ job. I plan on using my knowledge that I have gained through completing this course and applying it whilst working in a veterinary practice.

Do you plan to study any further in the future?

Some day in the future I would like to progress in my role and become a veterinary nurse.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Thank you! I would recommend this course and this college to anyone I know that is planning to study.
